About Obstruction

Obstruction Island sits between Orcas and Blakely. It's privately held with no public access, and local real estate figures put it at 49 parcels, all on the waterfront, with 27 of them improved. That makes it one of the smaller communities I work, and one where almost every house is a second home.

Every house on Obstruction is waterfront, which means every house takes weather and salt on at least one side. Expect rusted fasteners, seized hardware on doors and gates, decks that check and cup on the exposed corner, and docks and ramps that need attention every season.

Boat days and what I can bring

Obstruction is billed as a boat day: $1,295 all in, covering the skiff, fuel, and my tools and small materials. There are no half days. Because the island is small, two or three owners sharing one boat day is the best way to use it.

My boat is a 16-foot skiff. It carries me, my tools, and small materials, and 20 feet is the honest ceiling on board length. For bigger loads, like decking, sheet goods, or appliances, we arrange a barge or landing craft and I work off the pile.

Tell me which dock I should use and whether your community has rules about contractors landing, and I'll confirm before the trip.

Property care on Obstruction

With nearly every house empty most of the year, the most useful thing I do here is property care: a walkthrough inside and out, small fixes on the spot, and photos sent the same day. On a boat-access island, checks are scheduled as boat days when the water allows, and I'll tell you the day before if it doesn't.

Questions I get about Obstruction

Where do you land on Obstruction?

Wherever your community allows contractors to tie up. Tell me which dock and I'll confirm before the trip.

Can owners share a boat day?

Yes. One crossing, one boat day, split across the jobs waiting that day. It's the cheapest way to use me here.

Do you work on docks and ramps?

Yes, for repairs: decking, hardware, cleats, and ramp hinges. New docks and anything that needs shoreline permits go to a marine contractor.

Work waiting on Obstruction?

Send me the list and where I land, and I’ll quote the boat day before anything is booked. Call (360) 317-0203.
