Kayak, Paddleboard & Bike Storage Racks on San Juan Island
A kayak stored on the ground for a winter is a kayak with a dent in the hull.

Nearly every house on this island has a kayak, a paddleboard, or a few bikes, and most of them are leaning against a wall or lying on the ground. Stored that way, plastic hulls deform, boards get dinged, and the garage is one big obstacle course.
I install wall-mounted cradles and arms for kayaks and paddleboards, ceiling hoists for long boats in tight garages, vertical and horizontal bike hooks, and freestanding racks for sheds and covered outdoor spots. Kayaks get supported at the bulkheads on padded cradles, the way the manufacturers say to store them, not hung by the grab handles.
Fastening matters with boats. A seventeen-foot sea kayak is heavy and awkward, and a rack that pulls out of the wall is a broken boat. Every rack goes into studs, joists, or masonry.
Outdoor storage under a deck or eave works too, as long as the boats are out of the sun and kept off the ground. I'll help you pick the right spot. For the rest of the garage, see garage storage.

Can you hang a sea kayak from the ceiling?
Yes, with a hoist or overhead rack rated for it, fastened into joists, and supported at the bulkheads.
What's the right way to store a plastic kayak?
On its side or upside down, supported in two places near the bulkheads, out of the sun. Not flat on the ground, not hung by the handles.
Can you build a rack outside?
Yes, under a deck or eave, with a cover. Boats stored in full sun fade and get brittle.
